Autumn is creeping in. The rain is returning. The leaves are falling. And those little garden jobs we’ve been ignoring all summer are suddenly looking a lot more obvious.
So, naturally, we’re adding another useful garden problem-solver to the Spudulica range.
Coming very soon: coir matting.
And because we know not everyone needs an enormous commercial roll sitting in the garage for the next five years, it will be joining our growing range of handy cut pieces too.
So… What Actually Is Coir Matting?
If you’ve never come across coir before, you’ve almost certainly seen the material.
Coir is made from natural coconut fibre. It’s tough, fibrous and particularly useful outdoors, which makes it a brilliant material for protecting soil and helping vegetation establish.
Our incoming matting uses 100% coir fibre as its main material and has a substantial weight of 350g/m². The coir is supported by polypropylene top and bottom netting and polypropylene stitching to hold everything together.
In less technical Spudulica language?
It’s a big coconut-fibre blanket for your soil.
And it can solve quite a few annoying garden problems
Autumn Rain + Bare Soil = A Muddy Combination
We all know what British autumn and winter can throw at a garden.
Rain. More rain. A bit of wind. Then probably some more rain.
If you’ve got a newly landscaped area, exposed soil, a bank or a sloping garden, all that water can start moving loose soil around before your plants have had a chance to properly establish.
This is where coir matting comes into its own.
Lay it over the soil and secure it in position to create a protective layer between the ground and the elements. It’s particularly useful for: Garden slopes and banks, Newly landscaped areas, Exposed soil, New borders, Areas prone to soil erosion, Planting schemes that need time to establish and Weed suppression around shrubs and plants.
Instead of leaving freshly prepared soil completely exposed to autumn and winter weather, the coir provides a layer of protection while the garden gets on with growing underneath.
Planning an Autumn Planting Project?
This might be one of our favourite uses.
You can prepare your border, roll the coir over the soil and then cut an X where each new plant needs to go.
Fold the coir back, plant into the soil and reposition the material around the base.
Simple.
The matting helps suppress emerging weeds by reducing the light reaching the soil while still allowing water to get through. Coir fibres can also hold moisture and gradually release it, helping protect the soil from drying out too quickly.
So if you’re adding shrubs, creating a new border or finally tackling that bit of the garden you’ve been avoiding, coir could make the job a little easier.
And Yes… Spudulica Will Be Cutting It!
This is the bit we’re particularly pleased about.
Commercial landscaping materials often come on very big rolls. Brilliant if you’ve got a huge project. Slightly less brilliant if you’ve got one garden bank that needs sorting.
So coir matting will be another addition to Spudulica’s cut-piece range.

- 2x10m
- 2x25m
- 2x50m
That means you can choose something much closer to the amount you actually need rather than buying a huge roll and wondering where on earth you’re going to store the rest.
