December – in the garden – 2020

Finally, we have reached the last month of the year. In some months it has seemed to go on for ages but in other ways its gone by in a flash. While we have been going through emotional rollercoaster that has been 20202 our gardens have remained a constant. An oasis of calm when needed. Let’s not forget those last jobs of the year; ready to keep us going into another year and seasons to come.

You can still get planting; you might need a bit more effort with the shovel but trees and shrubs are happy to be planted in Nov and Dec.

Why not check on those vulnerable plants, are they well wrapped? Do any potted plants need wrapping or moving to a more sheltered location? If your experiencing a heavy frost maybe in a shed or indoors.

Do not forget to insulate any outdoor taps to prevent freezing. Also disconnect any hoses and allow to drain away any water to prevent freezing.

Keep any ponds covered to help prevent freezing, this will provide a water source for local wildlife. Covering will also prevent a build up of leaves and debris collecting over winter.

Get harvesting those winter crops one last time, what a lovey way to end the gardening year with a soup from your winter hardy veg like leeks.

You can also bolster those boarders and pots with some winter colour by planting those colourful winter bloomers such as cyclamen crocus and snowdrops.
