Gardening in lockdown

Re use and recycle

With these strange times falling into our peak growing seasons its time to get inventive and use what you have at home to help your new seedlings and plants in the garden.

Also helping with keeping at home as much as possible and good to keep busy if your self-isolating. Its good to be busy, keeping up your mental health and helping your local ecosystems.

Lets re-use household items –

Lolly sticks – lets be honest if you have small children you have them in abundance; use them to label your seedlings and newly potted plants.

Toilet roll tubes – again probably got a few of these knocking around, if you don’t have any small or starter plant pots use these to sow your seeds.

Empty bottles – no watering can? Put some holes in a bottle and fill with water and use to keep your garden watered. Needed in the sunshine this week!

Used Cans – feeling creative? Painting old cans can be used as a slightly larger plant pot or even bird feeder. Just make sure to put holes in the bottom for the can for drainage if using as plants. If making a bird feeder make sure the can has no sharp edges and has holes for you to add string to hang up safely out of a cat’s way.  Fill with loose seeds.

Do not forget to compost those leftovers. The garden weeds will also be out in force with the sunshine so they can be used to add to any kitchen waste.

Keep up with garden plants by watering either early or late before the sun is up. Pests will also be an issue, so when watering have a quick check of how plants are doing.  Also keep flowering plants beautiful by deadheading.

Enjoy what you can do at home, its amazing what can be done.

Being outside in the spring and summer is part of the joy of gardening.

Remember reuse and recycle and see what you can achieve.
