Step-by-Step: Turning a Water Butt Into a Beautiful Planter
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Lay everything out on a flat surface. It makes life easier when everything’s within reach. Gloves, check! Trowel, check! Beautiful plants, check! Oh, and don’t forget your geotextile liner – that’s the star of the show.
Step 2: Prep the Planter
Make sure your water butt has drainage holes. We had one pre-drilled – perfect! If yours doesn’t, you’ll need to add some to prevent soggy roots later on.
Step 3: Line It Up!
Time to use that Spudulica geotextile liner. Simply cut a sheet large enough to line the entire inside of the planter. This breathable fabric helps with drainage, keeps soil in place, and stops stones or debris from clogging up the bottom.
Step 4: Drainage Layer Down
Pop in your drainage stones or slate. This stops compost from becoming waterlogged and gives plant roots the airflow they love.
Step 5: Fill with Compost
In goes the compost! Fill almost to the top, leaving a little room for planting. Tap the sides gently to settle the soil.
Step 6: Plant Your Beauties
Now for the fun part – planting! Make small holes in the compost and gently place in your bedding plants. We chose cheerful begonias with glossy leaves and bright blooms. Firm them in and give them a little drink of water.
Step 7: Admire Your Work
Ta-da! You’ve turned a water butt into a show-stopping planter. We placed ours by the front door with other pots to create a welcoming plant display.
