Keep your water butt full and maximise the amount of water you can save ready for drier seasons. A simple diverter kit is the quick and easy way to keep your water reserves full. An innovation to fill your water storage device and to stop it over filling.
Tools You’ll Need:
- Drill
- Hole saw
- Marker pen
- Tape measure
- Hacksaw
- Spirit level
- Safety equipment – gloves/goggles
Steps to Install a Water Butt Diverter Kit:
- Choose the Right Spot
- Place your water butt on a flat, stable base close to a downpipe.
- Make sure it’s elevated slightly for tap access and to allow room for a watering can. If applicable add a water butt stand.
- Mark the Hole on the Water Butt
- Use the diverter kit instructions to measure and mark where to drill the inlet hole on the side of the water butt (usually 8–10 cm below the top).
- Drill the Hole in the Water Butt
- Using the correct size hole saw or drill bit, carefully drill a hole at the marked spot.
- Insert the rubber grommet or fitting that came with your kit.
- Cut and Fit the Diverter into the Downpipe
- Measure and mark the correct position on your downpipe (generally level with or just above the hole in the water butt).
- Use a hacksaw to cut out the section of pipe if needed.
- Fit the diverter into the downpipe according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Connect the Diverter Hose
- Attach the hose from the diverter to the fitting on the water butt.
- Ensure it’s a tight fit and at the correct height so water flows properly.
- Secure and Test the System
- Make sure everything is watertight and the connections are firm.
- Pour water into the top of the downpipe or wait for rainfall to test the system.
- Install an Overflow or Stop Valve (Optional)
- Some kits include an overflow return or valve to stop overfilling. Fit this if included.
