The benefits of gardening – Spudulica home and garden blog – April 2019 “Stress Awareness Month has been held every April, since 1992 to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. Despite this running for 20 years we have got a long way to go. According to the Mental health Foundation 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.” At spudulica home and garden we are adding a blog linked to Stress awareness Month. Stress is a natural response to a threat or demand, it can cause physical, emotional reactions. Everybody has been affected by stress at some point. It can range from the minimal to the severe and can be the cause of many health issues if continuing long term. Depression, nausea, eating less or more and dependence on alcohol or drugs can also be factors. It really has an impact on your day to day life. At Spudulica home and garden we want to facilitate your enjoyment of your outdoor spaces. Be that a small yard with bright pots, a well-established garden, a window box or a neglected space. There are so many things you can do to bring joy for nature, and you own well being. April is a wonderful month and is one of the first few months of spring. It is wonderful to see the tress, bulbs and shrubs growing and producing flowers and shoots. It is a lovely experience to plant a seed and see it grow. Stress awareness months website is on a mission to end stress and to help sufferers in helpful ways. “Share your coping mechanisms – if something has worked for you why not share it. It might benefit someone you care about and, in the meantime, it might help you take your focus off your own challenges.” Another suggested way to help relieve stress is to do regular exercise, do a relaxing activity and set goals and priorities. All of these can be covered by gardening or starting a garden project. Raking or digging soil can help to elevate your heart rate, this coupled with bending and lifting of pots can add to a whole-body workout.  (please take it easy if you have any health condition and take at your on pace) Choosing seeds and plants at a local shop or garden centre can be a lovely relaxing and enjoyable experience. The colours and smells can only inspire those creative plans. Also, if the garden centre has a cafe, why not sit and enjoy while you plan. Goals can be a simple as try and keep one plant alive to flowering, to a whole garden patch. It is well known gardening is addictive. Providing a creative outlet in the outdoors and a positive impact in your own spaces. Stress is a major factor in our day to days lives, but it is those little creative and relaxing tasks that we can do to combat it. Make time in your day –  you can not only decrease your stress but create a beautiful environment for the future.
