Installing a new water butt is one of the easiest ways to save water, lower your water bills and keep your garden looking its best through the warmer months. Whether you’ve chosen a compact wall-mounted model or a larger rainwater harvesting tank, getting the pipework and connections right is just as important as choosing the water butt itself.
There’s one small, inexpensive item that often gets overlooked during installation, yet it can make all the difference between a watertight system and one that develops frustrating drips. Meet the humble PTFE tape.
It may not be the most exciting item in your toolbox, but PTFE thread seal tape is one of the best-value additions you can make when fitting taps, connectors and threaded pipework to your water butt.
PTFE tape works by filling the tiny gaps between threaded fittings, creating a reliable seal that helps prevent water leaking through the threads. Even new fittings that appear to screw together perfectly can benefit from a few wraps of PTFE tape, especially once your water butt is full and under pressure.
Anyone who has installed a water butt knows the feeling of filling it for the first time, only to spot a slow drip from around the tap or connector. In many cases, this isn’t because anything is faulty – it simply needs a proper thread seal.
Applying PTFE tape only takes a minute. Wrap it neatly around the male thread in the same direction that the fitting will tighten, usually five or six turns is plenty. Once tightened into place, the tape compresses into the threads to create a much more effective seal.
The beauty of PTFE tape is that it costs very little but can save a great deal of time, frustration and wasted rainwater. Instead of draining your water butt and taking fittings apart to fix annoying leaks later, you can fit it correctly first time.
At Spudulica, we recommend using PTFE tape whenever you’re installing a new water butt tap, brass tap upgrade, hose connector or threaded fitting. It’s particularly useful if you’re adding extra pipework or customising your rainwater harvesting system.
As more homeowners look for ways to collect rainwater and make their gardens more sustainable, it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest difference. A properly sealed water butt system means less maintenance, fewer leaks and more confidence that every drop of rainwater collected is staying exactly where it should.
So, while the water butt usually gets all the attention, don’t underestimate its little helper. PTFE tape might just be the hardest-working item in your installation kit.
If you’re fitting a new water butt or upgrading your existing setup, don’t forget to add a roll of PTFE tape. It’s one of the cheapest accessories you’ll buy, but it could be the one that saves you the most hassle.
