National Children’s Gardening week – What to do with the kids?

National Children’s Gardening week
25th May- 2nd June

“In ever walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks” – John Muir
One of the best weeks of the year!

Also, this year coinciding with part of half term – so No Excuses!!

This year we have a series of blogs about getting about in the garden with your kids.
Already we have shared Sainsbury’s Money Matters Site lovely project on how to make your own bird feeder. What a lovely way to bring birds to your garden and keep those kids engaged with their own project.

“Unless we are willing to encourage our children to connect and appreciate the natural world. We can’t’ expect them to help protect and care for it “– David Suzuki

Today we have a selection of ideas with what you can do with your children/grandchildren/cousins/friends in your own outdoor spaces. They are easy to organise and can be done at home or in a local park. They can also be easily tailored to the children’s ages.

Firstly, we have a Leaf hunt – provides a great insight into different plants. Getting the children to look closely at the different shapes they can see. This will also provide an opportunity to smell, touch and discover.
I have quickly made up a sheet on the computer to allow the kids to draw the leaves they find.

Secondly, we have a bug hunt. Again, a great opportunity for kids to explore the garden and other local areas in search of creepy crawlies. It might also help you locate some not wanted guests that you can then re locate!

I have also quickly created a sheet for the children to tick off when they have seen a garden bug. This sheet is catered to younger children who may not be able to spell or recognise some garden bugs.

So lets get into the garden and keep those kids interested and busy!
